Open STP File

Information, tips and instructions

Open STP File

A file with an STP extension contains the 3D object project that meets the standards of the STEP format (Standard for exchanging product data). STP files are similar to STEP files in terms of structure and format, STEP is just less used.

STP is an ASCII text file that complies with the ISO 10303-11 standard specification. The format is platform independent. It was developed as a universal and non-proprietary standard to ensure compatibility, and thus facilitate the exchange of 2D / 3D project data between applications.

The indices of the STEP standard related to CAD applications are designated 2xx. For example:

  • AP 201 - simple 2D drawing geometry
  • AP 202 - 2D / 3D drawing with associations, but without assembly hierarchy
  • AP 203 - 3D designs of project parts
  • AP 204 - mechanical design with its representation
  • AP 214 - Basic data for automotive mechanical design

The STP file must follow the specifications of each one if they are used to share data between different applications or platforms.

How to Open STP File

You can try to open STP files with a text editor style notepad or Notepad++ in case it is plain text. Another option is trying to open it with an all-purpose image program such as IrfanView or 3D CAD Application as listed below.

Programs that support the STP file

Windows

  • 3D Object Converter
  • Autocad
  • CATIA
  • I think Parametric
  • FreeCAD
  • STEP File Browser
  • STP Viewer
  • TurboCAD
  • ZEMAX

Mac OS

  • FreeCAD
  • TurboCAD

Linux

  • CATIA
  • FreeCAD

There are also apps which can open STP on mobile devices, including Android, iOS or Windows Phone.

After installing one of the applications from the list, you should be able to open or edit a file with an STP extension just by double clicking on its icon.

However, you may find some problems opening this file. One of the reasons why you cannot open an STP file may be the lack of the appropriate application installed.

  • First - the STP file may be linked (associated) incorrectly with the application installed to open it.
  • Second - the file you want to open may be corrupted.

Other Uses of STP File Extension

The STP file presented here is the one used for 3D objects, however there are other types of files with an STP extension, such as:

  • Plain text file for creating Windows help.
  • Website template created for Microsoft SharePoint, a web-based collaboration program; Used as a starting point for the creation of new websites.
  • File created by Analysis Studio for data mining and statistical analysis.
